Inclusive Urban Mining: An Opportunity for Engineering Education

With the understanding that mining industry is an important and necessary part of production chain, we argue future must be sustainable responsible when responding to increasing material demands current next generations. In this paper, illustrate how concepts, such as inclusiveness circular economy, can come together in new forms mining—what call inclusive urban mining—that could beneficial for not only industry, but environmental social justice efforts well. Based on case studies construction demolition waste WEEE (or e-waste) sectors Colombia Argentina, demonstrate present opportunity benefit society across multiple echelons, including empowering vulnerable communities decreasing degradation associated with extractive improper management. Then, recognizing most engineering curricula field do include mining, especially from a community-based perspective, show examples integration form education first-, third- fourth-year design courses. We conclude by providing recommendations make visible relevant education.
